From 1st October 2011 in Scotland, the Alcohol etc. (Scotland) Act 2010 introduces a new mandatory condition for all premises licences and occasional licences requiring that there must be an age verification policy in relation to the sale of alcohol on the premises.

The law has set a minimum age of 25 years for the policy where it appears to the person selling the alcohol that the customer may be under the age of 25 years.

As a result of this change in the law, customers in any premises in Scotland licensed for the sale of alcohol, including pubs, clubs, restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores may be asked to produce identification where they appear under the age of twenty five to prove that they are over the age of eighteen and can lawfully purchase alcohol.

So, if you are lucky enough to look under 25 you will be asked to prove that you are aged 18 or over when you buy alcohol.  If you are under 18 you are committing an offence if you attempt to buy alcohol*.

*Other parts of the united Kingdom have their own legal requirements in relation to customers proving their age before purchasing age restricted products including alcohol.

Green and Recyclable Business

Western House and Ayr Racecourse are striving to operate as a 'Green and Recyclable' business and have introduced a number of innovations to achieve this.

These include the use of low energy light bulbs, automatic power operation for the rooms and automatic switch off of all appliances and lights when leaving the rooms when the key card is removed.

Our hotel guests can play a part in helping us achieve a greener environment and we aks them to be as user friendly with the towels as possible.

Towels that guests wish to be replaced should be placed in the bath as this saves replacing them every day.

Many of our back of house areas have an automatic sensor to switch on the lights when entering the areas. We have an adapted heat recovery system where the lost heat from the kitchen extracts is re-used to help assist our air conditioning system throughout the hotel.

Every office and building throughout Western House Hotel and the Racecourse use a paper recycling collection and all waste from paper, food and drink is separated and collected.

We are one of the first businesses to have achieved the pass for the new environmental policies and we have been used as a case study by Zero Waste on how we have worked at reducing our waste and utilising our recycling.

The stunning gardens at Western House Hotel are beautifully manicured and we utilise or gardener's skills to grow plants from "pots to ground".

Food and liquor purchasing as far as possible is done from local companies so that our carbon footprint is kept to a minimum.

We can always do better and we are constantly working to ensure all areas can be as carbon, green and environmentally friendly and we ask all our guests and visitors to help us keep us on track!
